ROCKAWAY, NJ - Morris Hills High School is proud to announce the naming of its entire athletic complex as the Raymond T. Odierno Athletic Complex, honoring one of its most distinguished alumnus. This decision reflects the school's commitment to recognizing excellence in scholarship, athleticism, and character.
General Raymond T. Odierno, a 1972 graduate of Morris Hills High School, exemplified the values of dedication, leadership, and service throughout his illustrious career. As one of Morris Hills High School's favorite sons, Odierno's journey from the halls of his alma mater to the highest echelons of military leadership, serves as an inspiration to current and future students.
Biographical Highlights:
- Born in Rockaway, New Jersey, on September 8, 1954
- Graduated from Morris Hills High School in 1972
- Attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1976
- Earned a Master's degree in Nuclear Effects Engineering from North Carolina State University
- Served in the U.S. Army for 39 years, retiring as a four-star general
- Held the position of Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 2011 to 2015
- Led the successful troop surge in Iraq as Commanding General, Multi-National Force – Iraq (2008-2010)
- Received numerous awards and decorations, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and Army Distinguished Service Medal
Throughout his career, General Odierno was known for his strategic brilliance, calm under pressure, and deep commitment to service. He played a pivotal role in leading U.S. forces during the Iraq War, shaping military operations and strategies with a focus on the safety and success of his troops. His leadership helped guide the nation through some of its most challenging military engagements. Under his leadership, the 1st Brigade Combat team of the 4th Infantry Division found and captured Saddam Hussein.
In addition to his military accomplishments, General Odierno was deeply respected for his compassion, humility, and dedication to the well-being of others. He always sought to uplift those around him and embodied the values of teamwork, sacrifice, and resilience. His enduring legacy goes beyond the battlefield, serving as an inspiration to students, athletes, and members of the community.

During his time at Morris Hills High School, Odierno was known for his academic prowess, leadership in student government, and outstanding performance on the football field, on the basketball court, and on the baseball diamond. He was a nine time letter winner. He continued to excel in athletics at West Point, where he played one year of football and three years of baseball.
In May 2014, General Odierno, then Chief of Staff of the United States Army, returned to his roots with a visit to his alma mater, Morris Hills High School. During this homecoming, General Odierno reflected on his formative years at the institution, crediting Morris Hills High School for providing him with the strong foundation that enabled his rise to the Army's highest-ranking position. The decorated military leader shared insights from his distinguished career with current students and faculty, emphasizing the role his high school education played in shaping his leadership skills and commitment to service. General Odierno's visit not only honored the school's legacy but also inspired a new generation of students to pursue excellence and consider careers in public service.
